The Treaty of Lisbon – Summary and evaluation of the new provisions
The modified Treaty of Lisbon contributes to an improved capacity to act in a European Union of 27 and more Member States.
This includes an improved delimitation of powers between the European Union and the Member States through introduction of a right for national parliaments to lodge complaints, an extension of qualified majority voting in the Council, a simplification of enhanced cooperation between a group of Member States as well as introduction of co-decision as the standard legislative procedure. Despite criticism of many details, these are all good reasons for the Treaty of Lisbon to enter into force rapidly!
This publication of BDI and BDA gives an overview of the new elements introduced by the Treaty of Lisbon, an evaluation of individual provisions as seen by German business and a detailed description of the different decision-making procedures. With this publication, we want to submit our position and to argue for a European Union that is capable of political action and economically strong.
