Competitiveness

The BDI stands up for an integrated EU economic policy based on the principles of the Social Market Economy.

German industry accounts for 26.8 % of the gross added value of all European industry. A policy that puts in place the right framework conditions at European level for a strong and internationally competitive industry is of the highest interest for Germany.

A sensible economic policy does not involve the state becoming active in businesses itself or subsidising uncompetitive sectors. In order to promote growth and jobs, it is more important to create an attractive framework for innovation and production. The Lisbon Strategy for Growth and Employment, the Better Regulation initiative and the result of sector initiatives must be taken into greater account in concrete legislative proposals. EU regulation, in particular in the areas of environmental, climate, consumer and social protection should not contain new and unnecessary or disproportionate burdens on businesses.
