In the BDI working group ”Healthcare Infrastructure in Developing Countries and Emerging Markets” companies aim to develop and construct hospitals in less developed regions of the world.

Demand for healthcare services and thus also for healthcare facilities are growing worldwide. Especially developing countries and emerging markets are being confronted with a tremendous backlog in this area.

In order to reach the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, new care facilities must be built and existing facilities modernised. In autumn 2008 the BDI launched the “Healthcare Infrastructure in Developing Countries and Emerging Markets” working group. It is funded by German companies and supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) via the KfW Development Bank (KfW).

Its goal is to operate hospitals on a economically sustainable basis under the challenging conditions in developing countries and emerging markets, while enhancing access to high-quality healthcare services. The underlying concept will be tested in at least one pilot hospital. In parallel a contact point for international requests for solutions for healthcare infrastructure will be put in place in Germany. The working group aims to close the gap between the international demand for hospital system know-how and the excellent solutions German companies have to offer.
