As the country with the world’s third largest crude oil resources and fifth largest gas resources, Iraq provides manifold business and investment opportunities. In the context of current reconstruction this applies in particular to the transport sector, electricity generation and power distribution, the construction and construction materials industry, the healthcare sector and the agricultural sector.

The BDI actively supports the revival of German-Iraqi business relations. By organising and supporting various events, such as the “Iraqi-German Business Panel” held on the occasion of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s visit in summer 2008, the BDI creates platforms to give both German and Iraqi companies the opportunity to intensify business contacts.

Together with the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), the Goethe Institute and the German Embassy in Baghdad, the BDI is also organising a training project “Iraq Horizons 2015”. The objective is to provide further training for young Iraqi university graduates via internships in companies in Germany. The programme envisages a language course for the Iraqi participants in the spring and summer of 2009, followed by a six to eight-week internship in a company in Germany.
