State aid and new regulation are to play a key role in Commission plans for a new approach to EU industrial policy . "Even processes involving large-scale structural change should in principle be steered via the market. The state should only appear as an actor to provide additional support in exceptional cases," urged the BDI Director-General. "The reform strategy lacks adequate concrete approaches to boost European competitiveness", Mr.Schnappauf criticized. The focus was not on the importance of free trade and small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). "The objective to prevent additional EU regulation imposing unnecessary burdens on business is entirely missing."
"Playing industries off against each other as 'green' industries' and 'non-green' industries will not get us anywhere. Every wind turbine needs steel. Sustainable growth through innovative products should be the objective of all sectors", said Mr. Schnappauf. German industry recognised the growth opportuntities offered by green products and services many years ago.

"Europe needs a clear and unequivocal commitment to the market economy."
"One-sidedly focusing on the so-called 'green economy' as a panacea for growth, employment and environmental protection will not help us achieve our goals," commented BDI Director-General Werner Schnappauf on the public consultation document issued by the European Commission on the future "EU 2020" strategy. It is to replace the current Lisbon Strategy for Growth and Employment.State aid and new regulation are to play a key role in Commission plans for a new approach to EU industrial policy .
